Jancis Robinson

From Walter Speller’s article on Barolo 2019:
‘Serralunga d’Alba has become known for some of the most beautiful Nebbiolo tannins in the entire denomination – firm, sculpted, lively and super-animating – but in this vintage the wines seem a little muted. Sheer class, however, marks both Ferdinando Principiano’s village wine and (again) Domenico Clerico’s Aeroplan Servaj. At the cru level I was smitten by Bruna Grimaldi’s rendition of Badarina, while I simply cannot fault Luigi Baudana’s Baudana and Cerretta. The estate is faring extremely well in the capable hands of the Vajra family. Azelia’s Cerretta also made me sit up, suggesting that with this wine, and their Margheria, the estate is on a quality fast track.’

Note

Serralunga d’Alba. Youthful mid ruby. Enticing nose of minerals and fruit with dry, savoury oak hints. A youthful and generous palate that is not yet fully open. Very long with lots of juice and persistent tannins coating the mouth on the finish. (WS)

Note

Roddi. Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Cool raspberry nose with a hint of cooked rhubarb. A core of ripe red fruit layered with coating tannins. Very slow to show it all and with a juicy, if embryonic, finish. A really impressive result for this little-known vineyard. (WS)

Note

Serralunga d’Alba. Tasted blind. Concentrated mid ruby. A little closed and brooding and with notes of herbs. Supple and round and almost a little easy-going. Approachable, soft and generous fruit finish with grainy tannins. Not very Serralunga-like. (WS) 15%. Drink 2019-2026

Note

Serralunga d’Alba. Mature mid ruby with bricky rim. Lifted, perfumed sweet strawberry and spice nose. Sweet and ripe palate that perfectly maintains a mid palate weight. Elegant and almost a little sour. Bags of powdery tannins and plenty of strawberry fruit on the finish. A little populist and certainly does what it says on the tin. (WS)

Rather haunting perfume. Manages to seem light-bodied even with 14.5% alcohol. Marked acidity and ferny-like freshness. You could almost drink this already with pleasure! But there is no particular sweetness. Great fun. Even if not for the very long term.
